the death and resurrection of psrv

August 18th, 2005

After over 8 months of no apt-getting (thanks to a broken java package), it was time to do a full dist-upgrade run. As you may have guessed, this didn’t go so well. What followed was a large number of segfaults and lib errors, which was not fixed after upgrading to a 2.6 kernel.

During the last few days, with the help of p00ya I tried various things to get it working, to no avail. A format was needed. I suck at backing up, thus the now empty blog ^-^.

I also tried to rebuild the /ftp/ raid late at night and failed. xfs_repair continued to tear the data’s inodes to pieces, resulting in about 40k files names with 12 character numerical garbage. Formatting the raid will take place in the days to come, hopefully followed by a lan to recover whatever it is that we decide to stick on there this time around.

A fresh start is always a good thing once in a while – the last psrv format was so long ago I can’t even remember.. (the kernel was 2 years old, and I found older kernels in /boot/). One thing I have come to learn is that have the programs I was using to config stuff have become deprecated, so I’m basically chucking away any configs that don’t need to be salvaged and starting fresh.

If you want a user account again on psrv, contact me. If you need any software / libs installed, get an account first and I’ll hax it up.

FTP, samba, pop3, smtp, www and ircd to some extent are up and running. /home is intact. /var/www is fine too.

All looking OK.
